In a recent forum, former Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, urged the Commission to avoid imposing changes in the electoral system on political parties. He highlighted the significance of the country’s three decades of uninterrupted democracy, emphasizing the importance of maintaining this standard. He spoke at the Fourth Constitution Day Lecture, where he urged key players in the electoral system to prevent actions that could destabilize it.
Dr Afari-Gyan stressed that the EC should not enforce decisions regarding electoral reforms on political parties, but should aim to reach a consensus. He suggested the Inter-Party Advisory Committee as an ideal platform for discussing changes to the electoral practices, regardless of whether the proposed changes come from the Commission or the party. He noted that it is crucial to thoroughly discuss any intended changes at iPAC meetings to aim for agreement.
