Twelve courts, including eight in the Greater Accra and four in the Ashanti regions, are set to benefit from small claims and debt recovery courts to handle claims from financial institutions.
Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo launched these specialized courts on Tuesday, August 6, in response to the significant rise in claims made by individuals and companies at district courts nationwide.
An assessment by the Quality Assurance Unit and the Monitoring Department of the Judicial Service revealed that the Adenta District Courts 1&2 had 773 active cases as of May 2024, with Quick Credit & Investment Micro-Credit Ltd (now Bills Company Limited) alone filing 120 cases, representing about 15% of the total active cases.
Over 70% of these cases were for claims under GH₵5000.

The specialized courts will operate every working day in the afternoons and on Saturdays, with weekday sessions from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Saturday sessions from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
In the Greater Accra Region, District Courts in Ashaiman, Teshie, and La will serve as the Saturday courts, while those in Weija, Sowutuom, District Court ‘2’, Adenta, and Gbese will handle weekday afternoon cases.
In the Ashanti Region, District Court ‘2’, Asokwa, and District Court ‘1’, Prempeh Assembly Hall will function as the Saturday courts, with Circuit Court ‘2’, Asokwa, and Asokwa Circuit Court Conference Hall operating on weekday afternoons. These courts aim to address the nearly 55,000 claims Quick Credit & Investment Micro-Credit Ltd intends to file in the Lower Courts, ensuring timely adjudication to prevent the erosion of the time value of liquidated claims.
