Ghana is set to host the Koshien Baseball Championship, a landmark event, on August 31 and September 1 at the Labone SHS field. The announcement was made by Mr. Shinya Tomonari, founder of the Japanese Baseball Softball Foundation (J-ABS) and former manager of Ghana’s national baseball team, during a ceremony at the Ministry of Youth & Sports.

The event is part of the Baseballership Educational Programme, which emphasizes character development and life skills through baseball. Ten volunteer coaches from Keio University in Japan will join ten Ghanaian coaches to implement the programme across selected schools and communities.

After a three-week training period, the most promising athletes will be selected for regional teams, leading up to the inaugural Ghana Koshien Championship in Accra.

To measure the programme’s impact, Keio University and the University of Ghana have partnered to research the effects on 100 participants’ academic performance, social behavior, and overall development.

During the event, Prof. Takaaki Kato and Mr. Tomonari presented baseball equipment to the Ghana Baseball Softball Federation (GBSF). Mr. Ernest Danso, President of Ghana Baseball, expressed optimism that this initiative would benefit other sports federations in the country.

The delegation also met with Alhaji Abdul Majeed Bawah, Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority, who emphasized the need for technical research to enhance GBSF activities.
