Fishermen in Jamestown, an indigenous Ga fishing town in the city of Accra, reported record breaking catches, after the ban on artisanal and inshore fleet fishing was lifted last week.

They attributed their bumper harvest to the weather, adding that this year’s catch is significantly better than those of previous years and that the cold weather played a role.

Speaking on Citi FM, the chief fisherman at Jamestown, said Sunday and today were the best days of fishing for the first time in a while.

“For the first time, Sunday and today [Monday], in fact Sunday was the best, I can say it is because of the weather.”

This means the prices of fresh fish on the various market centers in the capital will be significantly stable with a possible reduction.

For fish lovers, grilled and fresh fish at food joints across the city might be cheaper when compared to the closed season.

On Saturday, at Accra’s Jamestown Landing Beach, fishermen indicated that they were ready for bumper fishing following a one-month break.

The ban was then officially lifted on Friday, August 1, 2024, to declare the sea open for artisanal and inshore fleet fishing.
