Kojo Antwi, a celebrated Ghanaian musician, has been well-known for his captivating December 24th performances at the National Theatre, a tradition that has significantly changed. The venue that once elevated his artistry now hinders his aspirations for greater artistic achievement. Antwi has expressed his disappointment with the National Theatre’s deteriorating condition and its failure to keep pace with his evolving creative demands, leading to his decision to stop hosting his annual concerts there.
The National Theatre had been the home of Antwi’s iconic December 24th concerts since they began in 1991, drawing crowds of eager music fans. But as Antwi’s artistic vision grew, the venue could no longer support his innovative concepts, prompting a move to various other locations across Accra, including the Accra International Conference Centre, Kempinski Hotel, and Labadi Beach Hotel. This year, the concert took place at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, marking another year without the National Theatre.
Reflecting on the past allure of the National Theatre in an interview with Onua FM, Antwi lamented its current state, plagued by poor maintenance. He emphasized that an artist’s growth can sometimes outpace the confines of their original platform, comparing an artist’s expansion to a glass outgrowing its container. Antwi’s artistic journey has reached a point where the National Theatre no longer suits his creative needs, despite the many groundbreaking performances he once staged there.
