A second-year University of Ghana (UG) Bachelor of Arts student named Asioh Joseph Mawuli has filed a lawsuit against the university’s administration over the elections for the Student Representative Council (SRC).
This lawsuit was brought in response to Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah popularly known as Guru NKZ re-entering the UGSRC presidential contest.
Guru had previously been disqualified from the presidential contest and had filed a petition against the SRC Electoral Commission, which he won.

Guru was disqualified by the SRC’s Electoral Commission on the grounds that he does not meet the residency requirement as stated in the university’s SRC constitution, last month.
Mawuli sought a declaration in his writ summons that the disqualification of Adjei Yeboah Maradona and Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah by the SRC vetting committee for not meeting the qualification criterion under Article 30(1)(a), which mandates that candidates must be campus residents and eligible to contest for a Junior Common Room (JCR) position in their hall, of the SRC constitution was a valid and binding decision.

“A declaration that the jurisdiction of the Appeals Board was not invoked by any of the disqualified aspirants to warrant the overturning of the Judgment of the Judicial Board dated 15th September 2024 which upheld the decision of the vetting committee to disqualify Adjei Yeboah Maradona and Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah.”
“A declaration that the notice sent by the office of the 2nd Defendant directing the 4th Defendant to include Adjei Yeboah Maradona and Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah as candidates of the SRC election without an appellate decision overturning the Decision of the Judicial board is null, void and of no legal effect,” he stated.
The plaintiff further requests a declaration that an email directed at the Electoral Commission and Judicial Board of the SRC, instructing them on how to conduct their business, was an attempt to sabotage the independence of the Judicial Board and the Electoral Commission, sent by the 3rd Defendant, Prof. Gordon A. Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor, via the 2nd Defendant, Prof. Rosina Kyerematen, Dean of Students Affairs, UG.
“An order directed at the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd defendants to refrain from circumventing the laid down procedures by SRC constitution for dispute resolution.”
“An order directed at the 4th Defendant to refrain from including Adjei Yeboah Maradona and Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah in the list of candidates to partake in the balloting and subsequent contest of the 2024 SRC election of the University of Ghana.”
