Telecommunication services in Ghana have been significantly disrupted due to outages on several underwater fibre optic cables last Thursday. Companies like MTN Ghana and Telecel (formerly Vodafone Ghana) are among those affected. The service interruption is particularly evident in internet connectivity for both Mobile Network Operators and Data Service Providers. Emerging details reveal the damage to be extensive, with insider industry sources describing the impact as substantial.

The disruption extends beyond Ghana, with at least seven major African submarine optic fibre cables reported to have been compromised. This has resulted in telecommunication challenges for roughly 10 West African countries, including Ivory Coast, Liberia, Benin, Ghana, and Burkina Faso. South African nations such as South Africa, Namibia, and Lesotho are also experiencing similar issues. While cables like Seacom/TGN, AAE1, and ElG are cut in the Red Sea, others like WACS and ACE are faulty. MainOne and SAT3 are currently offline due to faults near Abidjan. Although Liquid networks remain operational, full restoration of services may not occur until Saturday, as repair efforts are expected to take time.
