In a recent unsettling event at the University of Ghana, a young man in his twenties suffered an assault within the Legon campus, igniting widespread dismay and criticism. The incident occurred on Monday, January 15, 2024, and in response, the University has issued a statement expressing grave concerns and sharing the initial findings from their Security Services Unit.
The young man, who was dressed in feminine clothing, had sought shelter in the Okponglo area and was initially received by local women. The night took a turn when his gender was discovered, leading to an attack by the same women who had offered him a place to stay. The situation worsened when a refuse collector, under the impression that he was assisting a woman, mistakenly took him to a garbage site behind Dr. Hilla Limann Hall.

The following morning, once the refuse collector realized the young man’s gender, he too assaulted him and demanded he leave the premises. This incident came to light when University of Ghana students saw what was happening and promptly informed the campus security personnel. The university’s statement underscored their commitment to investigating the matter thoroughly and ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.
