The Winneba District Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Frank Anderson Junior, a 30-year-old student of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), to 13 months in prison for defrauding by false pretenses. Anderson pleaded guilty and requested time to refund the money he had fraudulently taken, but the court, presided over by Madam Josephine Fosua Appiah, convicted him based on his plea.
The case was brought forward by Detective Police Inspector Dorinda Azuma, who revealed that Anderson had promised to help the complainant, Emeta Cecilia Odaro, gain admission to UEW in exchange for GH¢2,500. The money was paid through a witness, Simon Alhassan, who was also a student at UEW. Anderson provided a fake admission letter and later asked for GH¢2,300 in fees, which Odaro also paid.
The fraud was discovered when Odaro attempted to pay her school fees but found the index number on her admission letter to be invalid. Further verification revealed that her admission letter was forged, and her name was not in the university’s system. She reported the matter to the police, leading to Anderson’s arrest.
