The Ghana National Fire Service on the day struggled before eventually quenching the fire, with the Deputy Director of Operations saying “It was not easy for us and there was a lack of access to where the fire was spreading and because it happened in the night, the shops were closed and we had to break through and that made it tedious.”
A week later, Vice President and flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia visited the market and donated GHS200,000 to the victims of the fire outbreak.
He also announced plans to construct a three-storey 120-store facility to replace the burnt market.
Four months on there might be some good news for the market women as the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNNMA) in the Greater Accra Region has cut sod for reconstruction of the part of the market which got burnt back in April.
The two storey reconstruction project is expected to be completed by the end of November, with Fedems Limited serving as the consultant and AMAA Integrated Limited serving as the contractor.
Upon completion the project will contain 48 sheds and 108 shops in total.
The assembly has also assured that all the affected market women would be allocated their shops.
