Africa’s largest rooftop solar project is located at the Free Zones Enclave, Tema in the Greater Accra Region.
The single largest project in the whole Africa is owned by Helios Solar Energy, a subsidiary of LMI Holdings and mounted on the roof of Mega Warehouse in the industrial hub of Ghana’s capital.
It was commissioned just yesterday by the Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, Herbert Krapa.
The entire project from connection, connection and installation were done by Ghanaian technicians and engineers.
The $17million project financed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) group will produce 16.8 megawatts of electricity.
The project sits on an area of one million square metres and is expected to help reduce the cost of power in the long run.
Speaking at the commissioning, Krapa said the project aligns with government’s efforts to increase the renewable energy production in the country.
“Very dear to my heart is how this project feeds into the government’s overall vision for the power sector and more specifically, the renewable energy vision that we have,” he said.
He then touched on how the project would help the country socio-economically by providing jobs, and introducing skills and technology to young engineers.
The minister also called on the private sector to provide the biggest funding for the project to complement that of government.
This, he said, will go a long way to support government in achieving its vision of making renewable energy generation contribute to 10% of the country’s energy generation mix by 2030.
