Newell Gavu, the man accused of destroying six effigies of the Big Six at the Airport roundabout in Accra, will undergo a brain scan to assess his mental health, following a court order.

The court has been informed that the report from the brain scan will take some time, and Gavu’s family has mobilized funds to facilitate the scan. As a result, the case has been adjourned to October 4, 2024, with the court requesting a comprehensive report on Gavu’s mental status before proceeding. Despite being charged with causing damage, the court has yet to enter a plea for Gavu.

Gavu, a 37-year-old CCTV installer, was arrested after a complainant saw him using a hammer to break the statues on August 31, 2024, while on his way to work at Kotoka International Airport.

During interrogation, Gavu provided inconsistent statements before claiming that a spirit in his dream instructed him to destroy the statues. Further police investigations revealed that Gavu, who lived with his parents, had a history of abnormal behavior and had previously been treated at Pantang Psychiatric Hospital but stopped taking his medication. The police commended the public and Airport Security for their vigilance in Gavu’s arrest.
