The Adentan Circuit Court has ordered Bolt Ghana Limited to pay GH¢1.9 million to Justice Noah Adade, a lecturer and CEO of a software solutions company, after the company failed to detect the theft of his identity, which was used by one of its drivers. Adade, an Information Technology Consultant, sued Bolt for GH¢2 million, accusing the company of negligence and breaching the Data Protection Act by using his personal data without proper verification for one of its drivers.
He argued that Bolt failed to confirm the ownership of the vehicle before registering it under his name.
In his lawsuit, Adade requested that Bolt remove his personal data from its database and sought compensation for the unauthorized use of his information.
He recounted an incident in August 2022 when he booked a ride on the Bolt platform and was shocked to see his name and image displayed as the driver. When he confronted the actual driver, who he knew, the driver apologized.
