The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly recorded 68 cases of cholera representing 0.03 percent of cholera cases in the Greater Accra Region with one death in 2014, according to a BMC Public Health report.
That same year, Ghana battled a cholera epidemic that saw 121 deaths from 20,199 cases recorded in 15 district and municipal assemblies in the Greater Accra Region alone.
However, in the past seven years, there have been zero recorded cases in the Ashaiman municipality, at least according to the Municipal Chief Executive of the area.

This, the Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Albert Boakye Okyere, attributed to improved sanitation in the area.
He made this statement at a free health examination for bakers that the agribusiness Olam Agri, in association with the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly and the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, organised.
“Sanitation in Ashaiman, it shouldn’t even take me alone to say that it has improved because in the past years, people knew that coming to Ashaiman, at the entrance what you are greeted with is a full spillover container with refuse running over, with animals all around them,” he stated.
He emphasised that the assembly will take all necessary steps to manage sanitation securely and advance the welfare of the populace, adding that those found guilty of open defecation and other sanitation violations were brought to justice.
In order to reduce open defecation, he said, the assembly led the charge in ensuring that every home had access to toilets and providing toilets, working with the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA).
According to the MCE, over 5000 homes have already been connected to the waste-water treatment facility, which has the potential to service roughly 24000 families. It is anticipated that additional homes will be added by the end of the year.
In order to accomplish that goal, he said, procedures would be taken to connect the public restrooms’ sewage pipes to the treatment plant, which is intended to produce gas from the waste.
