In a strategic move, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is actively engaging with Kobbie Mainoo, the 18-year-old prodigious midfielder from Manchester United, in an effort to persuade him to shift his international allegiance from England to his parents’ homeland, Ghana.
Mainoo, gaining attention for his outstanding performances with Manchester United, particularly highlighted by a recent stoppage-time winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers, has become a prime target for the Ghana FA. Despite having represented England at various age levels, Mainoo’s strong ties to Ghana, where he frequently visits during breaks, have sparked interest from the Ghanaian football authorities.

Randy Abbey, a member of the executive council of the Ghana FA, expressed the association’s keen interest in collaborating with Mainoo, stating, “The association would love to work with him and many like him at home and abroad.” This pursuit aligns with Ghana’s rebuilding agenda for the senior national team following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign. The potential switch of Mainoo could serve as a significant boost to the team’s prospects.
