The Ministry of Health has referred the case of Joy Gyaten, a driver who failed to deliver a consignment of approximately three million condoms and other contraceptives valued at 1.3 million cedis to the Eastern Regional Medical Stores in 2022, to the police for further investigation. The driver, who is currently retired and in poor health, is under investigation for his role in the missing consignment. The Ministry’s Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation, Emma Ofori Agyemang, revealed during a Public Accounts Committee sitting that the incident was reported to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the driver was initially arrested but later bailed.

Mrs. Agyemang explained that the driver had a stroke and was very ill, but the Ministry is currently cooperating with the CID to ensure a logical conclusion to the case. She noted that the docket is currently with the Attorney General’s office, and the Ministry is waiting for a response. James Klutse Avedzi, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, called on the Ministry to take significant action to recover the funds. He emphasized that the driver had a stroke and was very ill but has also retired. The Ministry sent a reminder to the CID about the delay and received a response that the docket is with the AG, awaiting a logical conclusion.
