The maiden edition of the 2024 Obour Cycling Challenge was an exciting showcase of endurance, speed, and strategy, bringing together some of the finest cyclists in Ghana. The event, held in the Eastern Region, witnessed thrilling competitions across various categories, with participants battling for top honors and cash prizes.

Main Event: 100km Race (Male Elites)
Emmanuel Sesi of the Royal Stars Cycling Club claimed the overall victory in the 100km race, finishing ahead of 58 cyclists. The race, which started in Nsawam and traversed Kyebi, Suhum, Apedwa, and back to Nsawam, ended with Sesi donning the yellow jersey and earning the grand prize of GHC 1,500.
In a gripping finish, the lead group included top competitors such as Humphrey Ayittey, Michael Naaba, and Francis Owusu. However, it was Sesi who crossed the finish line first, followed by:
• 2nd Place: Humphrey Ayittey (GHC 1,000)
• 3rd Place: Michael Brownson (GHC 500)
The race recorded an average speed of 37.34 km/h, completed in 2 hours, 40 minutes, and 40 seconds.
Team Time Trials (15km)
The team event was equally competitive, with Quick Steps Cycling Club emerging victorious:
1. Quick Steps: Average Speed – 43.50 km/h, Time – 27:35:93 (GHC 500)
2. Team FCG: Time – 29:32:47 (GHC 300)
3. Obour Cycling Club: Time – 30:27:98 (GHC 200)
Women’s 40km Race
In the women’s category, Erica Sedzro took first place, earning GHC 500 after completing the race ahead of Abigail Tetteh (GHC 300). The challenging route saw some participants unable to finish, but Sedzro’s resilience secured her victory.

Mr. Emmanuel Obour, the event chairman, expressed satisfaction with the competition’s outcome, highlighting its success in fostering a competitive spirit among participants. He promised an even bigger event next year, targeting June and November.
The Ghana Cycling Federation also commended the organizers, with General Secretary Shabban Mohammed emphasizing the event’s positive impact on local communities and businesses.
