The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) is likely to be renamed under the next New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
This plan by the ruling government was confirmed by the current running mate for the party, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, in a recent campaign train.

NAPO said that if given the mandate, the next NPP government will rename UPSA to Opoku-Ampomah University of Professional Studies.
He added, in a speech to some traditional leaders on his campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, that proposal for the name changed has not gotten to Parliament yet due to some delays.
He disclosed that President Akufo-Addo has already tasked the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adu Twum, to submit the proposal to the house of legislature.
“About two and half months ago, I was in cabinet when President Akufo-Addo queried the new Education Minister why they are yet to rename state universities after Opoku-Ampomah, Ephraim Amo and Paa Grant despite successfully renaming institutions after S.B Dromo, Apiah Minkah among others.
“He tasked him to send the bill to Parliament for it to be approved but has yet to submit it,” NAPO noted.
He then argued that several universities built with state funds have been named after notable personalities so naming using UPSA after Opoku-Ampomah, who built the institution with his own money, shouldn’t be an issue.
The University of Professional Studies, Accra, (UPSA) formerly the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) was founded by Nana J.K. Opoku Ampomah in 1965 as a private business professional institution.
The Institution was taken over by government in 1978 by the Institute of Professional Studies Decree, 1979 (SMCD 200).
