The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) last Friday launched this year’s edition of the “December in GH” initiative to promote tourism and coordinate a number of events for the holiday seasons of Christmas and New Year.

The Beyond The Return Secretariat and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture collaborated to host the launch of the sixth edition in the Christiansborg Castle Gardens in Accra.

“December in GH” is an annual event that forms part of the 10-year “Beyond the Return” campaign with the theme: “A Decade of African Renaissance” put together by the GTA and the Beyond The Return Secretariat to boost tourism, bridge the gap between Ghana and the historical diaspora, and unify Africans via the “Year of Return” and “Beyond The Return” campaigns.

Additionally, it seeks to realise Ghana’s potential as the continent’s top leisure destination, uniting the local Ghanaian population with the African diaspora around the world.

Out of the 95 entries planned to take place between November of this year and January of 2025, the GTA has officially approved 64 of them thus far in cooperation with other event planners.

Some events approved as part of the “December in GH” festival are African Food Festival, Diaspora in Ghana Brunch, Kids in Tourism Festival, Taste of Ghana 5.0, Get Kojo Antwified, Potomanto Festival, Afro Colour Walk, Betom Home Coming, Tadifest, Tema Masquerades Carnival, Detty Rave, Afrofuture, Awudome Carnival, The African Festival, Family Day Out, Russia I Come From, Afropopera 2024, Little Havana 24, and Clean Ghana Beach Festival.

Chief Executive Officer of GTA, Akwasi Agyeman, speaking at the launch.

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Executive Officer of GTA, Akwasi Agyeman, said that a poll conducted the previous year revealed that over 70 percent of visitors planned to return for this year’s initiative, which promised to be larger than the one that was held last year.

The GTA boss went on to say that around 1.3 million people were predicted to attend the festival this year, which was 150,000 higher than the previous year.

In the meantime, new entries can still be submitted to the Beyond The Return Secretariat until September 16 for assessment.
