Public technical universities in the capital and across the country may be forced to close down in October if the concerns raised by senior administrative staff are not settled by the end of this month.
This is because the Technical University Senior Administrators’ Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) is threatening a nationwide strike by the close of September 2024 if the government does not meet the concerns and demands raised.

TUSAAG said the government has failed to meet several agreements despite numerous promises.
The group in a September 8, 2024, letter said it was frustrated amidst the government’s discrimination against its members.
TUSAAG stated that the Ministry of Finance’s directive from May 2024 for the government to adopt updated allowances for senior members of public universities, which the government has refused to do, is blatantly against their rights.
TUSAAG further said the government has refused to implement revised allowances for its members although a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was signed in July 2024.
The association also demanded payment of agreed-upon rates for vehicle maintenance, off-campus, fuel, utility, and sanitation/security allowances.
“It is our resolve that should these payments not reflect in the validation of September 2024 salaries of our members, we will declare a nationwide strike action until the allowances are fully paid,” the association threatened.

Technical universities are likely to be closed down if the strike actions take effect, especially for a long period.
