The Ussher Fort in Accra has received an incredible facelift as community members came together to refurbish the tourist site and paint the museum.
This was led by Voluntary Workcamps Association of Ghana (VOLU) who collaborated with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), some youth in the community and Ussher Fort to give a new face to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Volunteers of VOLU together with staff and community youth painted the fort’s front edifice as well as the interior and exterior of the museum’s gallery.
The three-week work camp was initiated as a UNESCO World Heritage Volunteer Camp under the theme: “Engaging youth in preserving cultural heritage for prosperity.”
GMMB’s head of Monuments Division, Ussher Fort, Mr. Bernard Agyiri Sackey, said they did an impressive job which will attract more visitors to the fort.
“The work we did was amazing. Passers-by and community folks appreciated it. And I believe it will attract more visitors to the fort,” he said.
Aid of Accra also joined the exercise.
Ussher Fort was built by the Dutch in 1649, and was initially called Fort Crèvecœur.
The fort, now a museum, opens from 9am to 4:30pm from Monday to Saturdays.
